A tectonic earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.2°, shook the Ambon region and its surroundings again on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 11.39 local time.

Based on the analysis of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), this earthquake had an update parameter with a magnitude of M = 5.2.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located on land at coordinates 3.57 ° latitude and 128.26 ° east longitude, about 16 km northeast of the city of Ambon, Maluku province, at a depth of 10 km. The results of the model showed that this earthquake has no tsunami potential.

According to the Head of the BMKG Earthquakes and Tsunamis Center, Rahmat Triyono, taking into account the information provided by the BMKG official website, when observing the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a superficial type, caused by the activity of a local fault.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake in the Ambon region was generated by the deformation of the rock with a slip failure mechanism.

This earthquake was felt in the Ambon region with a V MMI intensity, where almost all the inhabitants felt the vibrations and many of those who were already asleep woke up.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Head of the Data, Information and Public Relations Center of the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Agus Wibowo, according to a report from the Operations Control Center (BPBD) of Maluku Province, there were damages, injured and dead, due to the earthquake.

A house was severely damaged as a result of the earthquake on September 26, 2019. A school was also identified, in Perumnas, Ambon, virtually inoperable due to the damage.

Damage was also recorded in the Passo music building in the Ambon Bay district, in the Nania RKSD IGD building and in a shopping center. The damage was significant at several points due to shallow epicenter bumps and on the ground.

As regards the victims, 1 person died in the Passo region and 2 more were injured. The name of the deceased is Vincent Ananto, 15 years old; the injured victims are Vido Maitimu, 21, and Kristian 36.

Until Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 12.05 local time, the BMKG monitoring results recorded 8 replicas with the greatest magnitude of M=4.6°.

The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by problems that cannot be explained.

In addition, the community was asked to avoid approaching cracked buildings, due to the risk of collapse.

It was also recommended to check their own homes, looking for cracks and other damages, caused by the earthquake, which could compromise the stability of the building and the life of its inhabitants.
