Popocatepetl Volcano 09 01 2020

Today, January 9, 2020, there was an explosion in the Popocatepetl volcano, which displayed a colorful trail of smoke and ash.

The CENAPRED, together with the UNAM (Autonomous University of Mexico), detected that today, at 6:31 am, the Popocatepetl volcano erupted.

In its continuous report, which is published every day at 11:00 am and reports volcanic activity within the last 24 hours, 268 exhalations composed of water vapor, gases and ash were detected . There were also 90 minutes of tremor, a vibration caused by a volcanotectonic earthquake that took place yesterday at 10:04 am and had a magnitude of 1.4 °.

The most important activity during the monitored period was the explosion today at 06:31 hours, whose column of fire, smoke and ash reached 3 km high and that, due to the wind, leaned and dissipated to the northeast .

The authorities recommend the general population not to approach the volcano, especially the crater, because of the danger of falling ballistic fragments. The estimated safety radius is 12 kilometers. It is also suggested, in case of heavy rains, to move away from the bottoms of ravines or water beds due to the danger of mud and debris flows.

People are urged to ignore rumors and pay attention only to verified information and the recommendations of the National Civil Protection Coordination through their official accounts: www.gob.mx/cenapred and @CNPC_MX

In case of ash rain, the authorities recommend that you place your nose and mouth with a handkerchief, clean eyes and throat with pure water, wear closed lenses if you need to go outside, as well as close doors and windows.

Given the current conditions, it is expected that the explosions will continue, with low to intermediate intensity, that there will be ash rain in nearby towns as well as slight pyroclastic and mud flows.
